SOME WORDS FROM THE ARTIST:
The practical aspects of purposeful mechanical devices and the
immutable laws of physics seem to have been my foundation for
exploration into the more phsycological and emotional pursuit
of Fine Art. I have no doubt that Michaelangelo's first thought
as he stood back and stared at the 14-foot tall chunk of marble
that became his "David", was "I better make sure
this bastard doesn't fall over." With this problem solved
he must have, and only then, begun to consider the more delicate
aspects of his creation.
Wood
has been of paricular interest to me, as it provides some limitations
in which to work, and often in "Found Wood"(as opposed
to kiln-dried, stabilized wood) it not only dictates the end result
but often inspires it. The struggle for control I experience with
wood allows me to execute a predictable result, but only on the
wood's own terms, resulting not in a compromise, but ratrher a
kind of collaboration. The studies shown here are best described
as such. In a word, these females portrayed here may be nude and
revealing, but they are by no means easy.

ADDENDUM:
The preceeding work represents a sampling of various directions I have
explored in wood. The "Found Wood" figures are varying degrees
of expressive portraiture, and with that in mind I have chosen to show
a few pieces that have been sold. These are directions I intend to explore
further, so new work along these lines will appear in the future. Pictures
2,4,9,11, and 14 on the gallery page represent directions I will be
working in with this thickness of predictable, cured wood. Pictures
1 and 7 depict the result of struggle on many levels and the final resolution
arrived at by me and the wood. All the others seem to fall somewhere
in between these two degrees of predictability.
INFORMATION
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Detailed Info: B.A.
Fine Art. To paraphrase Bob Dylan - "I went to college and learned
that a lot of people go to college."
Independent study of Greek and Renaissance art with the primary focus
on the figure. Oddly enough my study of fine art, particularly sculpture,
developed from my interest in beating dents out of old cars which I've
restored and built since my early teens. This helped me to develop a
fluency for form and was essential in creating sculpture. Both jobs
are dictated by feel and light. Have you ever seen shitty repairs on
a car. Believe me it requires a lot of mind -bending (and metal-bending)
effort To Do It Right!
